I was out picking a few strawberries this morning when a goat came racing out of the woods in pure panic, squealing like crazy. She got caught on a barbed wire fence, so I started to run & help her, but she got loose and came right to me. Sweet little frightened girl! I washed & wrapped a big cut in her knee - probably from the barbed wire - then I called my neighbor, who lives about 1/2 mile away, to see if he knew anyone who might be missing a goat. Turns out she was his! He said the goat likes to run around the woods with his 2 hound dogs (don't even get me started on the loose dogs issue), but the poor goat must have gotten lost because the dogs had come home without her. Sooo, I loaded her into my Jeep & took her home. Those dogs were really happy to see her - they all started butting heads! Farm life is full of wild surprises!

Jen, your story just keeps getting better! Our neighbors have 2 pigmie goats that come over to visit all the time but they definately have safe shelter to go home to at night. Hopefully your neighbor goats do to. It's really pretty neat that animals know when to ask for help, lucky for the goat she ran into the arms of the perfect person! It's also so amazing when domesticated and wild animals frolic together! What a cool sight! Traci |

Ok, here's Part 3! A couple days later, when my dogs were safely locked up, they started barking and I went out on the porch to see the neighbor's 2 dogs, the goat, AND the deer running around the pasture together. What a sight! Whatever happens, they sure are a happy bunch of buddies for now!

Oh, Jen - "part 2" sounds just plain yucky. I hope that the little goat and pup come home tonight unharmed - you never know. Hugs to you for goat-rescue - and maybe the neighbor will be a bit more careful in the future about dogs and goats running wild!

Well, part 2 of the story is that the goat and one of her dogs came back over our way later in the afternoon. I went way out in the neighbor's field to check on the goat's leg & remove her dirty gauze wrapping. Then, my dogs busted out of their makeshift gate on my porch & started chasing her with absolute blood lust. I ran after them screaming my head off till somehow I caught up with the goat & scooped her up, unharmed. Meanwhile her dog friend (who's just a big goofy pup) sat by and watched they fray. My kids finally managed to call the dogs back up to the house, so I let the goat go with her dog, and they headed toward home. At dusk, though, the neighbor came by asking if we'd seen either because they weren't home. I have no idea what happened, but I can't imagine a pygmy goat has much of a chance out in the woods...sigh....
