As a person who grew up in-town in a moderately sized college town and has always craved wilder places, I have to wonder how my kids will choose to live their adult lives. Since they're growing up (so far) in places that are pretty remote and off the beaten path, will they search out more urban experiences, and if so, will they come full circle back to the "sticks"? I feel like the wild is where everyone's heart is ultimately drawn, but that's such a narrow viewpoint!
Any theories??

I have never lived in a city...I dont even like drivin to the city LOL
We have always lived in small villages and presently a little more remotely on the end of a 5 miles dirt road into the woods.
We do alot of backwoods scouting and exploring and during the times we dont make it there for a while....it is like a homesickness for me. I need the wild. It truely soothes my soul.
I have brought my kids up running the woods and rivers and lakes. When my 15 year old daughter's wish was to have a wiener roast at a remote lake with her family, I felt soooo blessed by her wish in a world today of such materialistic ways. Hopefully we have passed our love of nature on...

I grew up in the country, had to spend a couple years in suburbia, but as soon as I was able, it was back to the country for me.
My brother and sister, who both shared the same environment as I as children, one a retired Marine test pilot and the other a computer wiz and project manager for a large corporation, gravitated to urban environs. Their nature forays are visiting their big sis.
My two step sons disliked being without TV while here and both are living in a city now.
While I can not imagine not wanting to be in the wilds. I accept that we must all follow our own hearts.

Yes, Jen I went through the same type of experience. Grew up in somewhat of a small college town and the day after my graduation moved to Phoenix, Arizona alone. I had a thirst for something BIGGER and different. But, those 2 years would be the ONLY years that I lived in a city. I vowed to never live there again and haven't. Since then I have lived in small towns wherever I go and although I do love the city I don't believe that I will ever call it home. Your experiences when you are young build the foundation of what you will become and the wilderness is in my soul. I knew it all along but still needed to see that indeed the grass isn't greener on the other side, infact it is more green than I thought, right where I am. Funny how we sometimes have to physically experience the things we find out that we knew all along! I guess you never really know what path your kids will take and what will be right for them but if you can connect them with nature I believe they will SHINE and be able to find themselves more easily. Because, they will be connected with the one thing that will ultimately get them through the rest of their lives....the universe, the great spirit, God, whatever you want to call it. The infinite power of Mother Earth will guide them if they know how to let her. Just a thought.... Traci |
