Posted - Mar 30 2007 : 2:02:27 PM Hey Girls, I'm no pro, but I consider myself an artist because I love to paint, draw, etc. This is one of my more recent experiments, kind of a multimedia bas relief.

Posted - Sep 27 2007 : 2:37:26 PM Here's the finished painting - my camera does funny things with the lighting, so I'm not sure it's true-to-life, but you get the idea. I called it "Late September." There were many beautiful painting entries at the library!

Posted - Sep 27 2007 : 11:39:04 AM Thanks, MB! I just finished it this morning & have it loaded in the car to take to the library this afternoon. Will post a pic of the "finished" product soon (not sure any painting is ever really finished, you know?). It's nice to have the kitchen all cleaned up - has been a messy art studio for weeks!

Posted - Sep 27 2007 : 08:41:54 AM Ohh! How things change. I liked the reds and oranges but there was the moon--I like bold colors but as I scrolled down and saw the muted scene--wow you captured it. I guess realistic was what it needed. MB

Posted - Sep 11 2007 : 11:50:51 AM I thought it would be fun to document the process of this painting since it's my first in such a long time, so here are some of the phases it has gone through so far:

   Major metamorphosis - almost done!
In the 2 years since I first sketched it, I never thought of it as a night scene. I visualized lots of deciduous fall colors. But, when I painted the foreground a dark base color, I suddenly realized it was meant to be nighttime. I think it makes it more unusual & mysterious!
9/25 - ok, so this effort has gone through a MAJOR metamorphosis (and I almost cut it up several times). I struggled with wanting a lot of wild color, but then it just didn't feel right. Finally, last night I got it. I guess it wasn't supposed to be anything other than a fairly realistic scene, because now I can feel the air, and that pleases me...at last.

Posted - Sep 04 2007 : 12:11:53 PM Well, I was going for a relief effect, and finally settled on some joint repair/plaster compound that I planned to paint with acrylics when dry. When I applied the plaster stuff to my canvas (with putty & butter knives), it looked pretty great - lots of furry-looking texture on the elk. But then, as it dried, it began cracking off in big chunks. So, I scraped & scoured it all off & started again. Now, because time is short for the contest, I've resorted to plain-old acrylic paint, but I'm doing a lot of stippling (little brush dabs) that give it almost a mini-mosaic feel that I like. It's a big recycled canvas - maybe 4'x4' - so it's taking some time. The sky is almost done...!
