Posted - Apr 10 2007 : 10:43:18 PM If you were going to get stranded in a particular climate- what scares you the most for survial?
Does the dry desert with it's temperature extremes scare you?
What about tropical jungle with strange critters and plants?
Deserted Islands? Arctic?
For me I think it is the tropical climate. I know the least about this type of climate. I would worry about all the creepy bugs and critters that could be poisonous.

Posted - Apr 25 2007 : 9:58:15 PM The bugs in the jungle freak me out, I've been around people with malaria, egads, that's a big one. The mosquitoes are pretty gnarly here in early summer, we call those the B-52's, they're big and slow, then we get the fast biters! The B-52's are so slow you can catch them between your fingers.
I'm a sweller upper so I don't like venturing where the bugs and leeches are thick. Leeches! I got a leech in central america, and giardia, and h pyloria and an unidentifiable parasite via the CDC. payback is hell for those! I love the really bad heat! In alaska newcomers will lose some number of sweat glands so it's a little tough to re aclimate sometimes to warmer climes, but everyone is different! jo |

Posted - Apr 25 2007 : 2:34:30 PM Wow, nature is so powerful and it can be so indifferent. Wouldn't want to be caught in the snow, the ocean, the desert, the jungle, or anywhere that I wasn't prepared for, especially in bad weather! If I had to choose a place to be stuck, I guess it would be the forest. At least I could build a lean to, eat some grubs and hopefully start a little fire. (On this note, Island of the Blue Dolphins was one of my favorite books as a girl and My Side of the Mountain was pretty great too :)

Posted - Apr 12 2007 : 1:48:45 PM I grew up in an area that was semi-desert. I feel extremely comfortable in a desert environment because I have learned survival techniques for that climate. As much as I am comfortable in that area, one of the only reasons I am comfortable is because I respect the power and dangers of the desert.
I found this site on the internet that has some great information on how to survive in the desert, including how to gather water, and items to pack if you are planning on a desert excursion. http://www.emints.org/ethemes/resources/S00000659.shtml

Posted - Apr 11 2007 : 08:23:58 AM The last place I'd want to be stuck is a desert - either of sand or snow! So vast & so few options...
