From "Buzz Cut: Electric Lawn Mowers Beat the Gas Guzzlers at Their Own Game" By LuAnne Roy
http://www.emagazine.com/view/?3865

Gas mowers are wreaking havoc on summer air quality (one hour of mowing is the equivalent of driving 350 miles in terms of volatile organic compounds). Fortunately, the electric models have been upgraded, with more power and better cutting.
Electric
Consumer-search.com reports that Black & Decker’s corded model, MM 875 ($230), is “maintenance-free” and has a one-lever height adjustment that’s easy to maneuver...Other corded models that fared well are the Craftsmen 37051 ($220), and the Homelite UT13120 ($200).
Cord-Free
Consumer Digest rates the Neuton Cordless Mower ($400) higher than Black & Decker, mostly due to its lighter 48-pound weight, its whisper-like hum and its “reel” mower, which cuts the grass at a diagonal angle that’s considered healthier for the grass.

I was thinking that there has to be a way to affix a batter to a corded one if you are electrically inclined. I know that some of the new battery operated ones are much more efficient. Watch Craigslist and any online classified ads you might have :D

That is great, Elizaray! I admit, we still have an old gas guzzler. We'd need a cordless to mow our path all the way to the chicken house & orchard, but I should keep my eyes open for a used one!

We bought a used corded electric mower for $40. I love it and I think it does great, especially on normal length grass. For really tall grass I need a weed eater, but I would with a gas mower as well anyway. :D
