So, I know that gas prices are ridiculous and all but I didn't want that to stop us. This weekend we are going on a roadtrip from Idaho to Colorado and we are so excited! We will be camping along the way and having picnics by the river....oh just talking about it makes me glow! I love the energy surge that Mother Nature can give! Much Thanks and Love to our beautiful planet. Saturday we are off on our "expedition" as my son would say, to camp, connect, love, nurture and explore! Our destinations are The Telluride Bluegrass Festival, good friends company and the WILD! We will be documenting our trip with an art journal and lots of photos I will try to pop in and share some adventures but I will definately share it all when we get back on July 3rd. Happy Summer Solstice to everyone and I can't wait to hear some of your stories from Summer 2008! Traci |

That is SO exciting, Traci - go for it! Can't wait to hear all about your adventures!! What's everybody else up to this summer? Are the gas prices holding you back??

| Sounds wonderful Traci!! My kids and I have several day trips to fish planned already and hopefully there will be a few camping trips with husband included in there too...we will be staying pretty near home...but since we arn't far from "out there" we can still get there!! Have fun!! |

| Thanks ladies, I'm so excited I feel the adrenaline rush already! Jenny, we will be somewhat close to your neck of the woods. We plan to camp somewhere outside of Provo and then to get on the I 70 East we go through Helper and Price which is just a bit northeast of you it looks like. Know of any great campsites outside of Provo? Traci |

I don't know Provo well at all..but I bet Libbie does. Her parents live near there.
I only know our little neck of the woods down here...been here only 6 years. |

Well, we made it back! Oh my what a little down time can do for your soul! Let's see, where to start....the car rides were great, my son is such a trooper I gave him a spray bottle to play with and it was the best thing ever! Hours of entertainment and a way to stay cool and hydrated at the same time! We would stop every time we crossed paths with a river and splash for a while. Joey loved to see how dirty he could get before washing it all off and doing it all over again. It was so neat to see him discover and explore his new surroundings. Stopping to camp was great, working as a team to gather firewood and get our beds ready. We had a blast at the Bluegrass Festival dancing and meeting new people. I still have pictures in my head of Joey busting out his dancing skills. I swear, that is one of the best things on Earth, watching you child's personality come out in self-expressed dancing! We went swimming everyday in the river or the glorious pond at our friend's house. We took several hikes and had races down the unknown paths. Kids can take you some amazing places if you just let them. We also got to experience a southern crawfish boil! I have never experienced that before! We were invited to a party and when we got there they had a cooler full of crawfish that the kids played with for a while until we boiled them with shrimp, sausage, corn on the cob and potatoes. Then we just dumped it all on the table and everyone stood in a circle around the table and ate. It was such a wonderful time full of good friends and amazing energy. But, I must say there is nothing like coming home, it can be just as exciting as getting ready to go. With all the expensive and fun things to do with your kids, often the most fun and memorable moments are the simple times throwing rocks into the river, watching a hawk overhead, digging your toes in the sand and enjoying just BEING with your child. Welcome back Traci! And happy Fourth!
Sounds like you and Joey really got to have some Mama/Son time that was priceless. How fun! I can't wait for our family to start having some of those wonderful memories to share!

Oh, Traci, what a wonderful escape from everyday doldrums! We've had such fun doing day trips to the creek, etc, this summer, but there's just nothing like a solid week (or more) away from home.
We spent the 4th, or Saturday really, at my mom's farm where we played in the pool and ate a dinner of local & garden goodies. It was a great time!

| That sounds really nice Jen. There's nothing like swimming on a hot day, eating local organic food and being with family. Oh, how perfect! I absolutely LOVE summer! Have your girls caught any keepers for a fish night supper? We got one salmon for the smoker this year, other than that it just been blue gill and trout. Enjoy the sunshineTraci |

| The kids and I (and possibly husband..he is iffy on it) are backyard camping this Thursday and Friday night to make sure we have all our gear ready for going camping at the lake Sunday and Monday night. Lots more short trips to come. We will get to fish (finally) on Monday and Tuesday for sure..lots more of that to come too!! I feel like we can finally get started with our "reel" summer now that baseball/softball season is over!! |

Jenny, Make sure you bring the matches. My husband left today for an overnight backpack to the top of Kallispell Peak. He's been wanting to do this since we moved here. Well I just went down to the shop and found a small container of farmer matches he usually takes with him on top of the freezer! Let's hope he has a backup supply I don't know about: ) JoAnn

Jenny - I like the idea of "trial" camping! What a fun way to make sure you're ready. I've never forgotten the matches like poor Jim, but I have forgotten lots of other stuff. I hope Jim does have a couple stashed away, JoAnn. You'll have to let us know how he fared!
We haven't done a whole lot of fishing this year (except for a good little haul of long-eared sunfish one day) because the rivers are so high still that the conditions aren't great for trout. I bet sunfish & bluegill would be really tasty smoked too....

Happy to report that the matches I found were not the ones Jim takes backpacking. They were his "car camping" matches : ) He had a nice time. You always have to worry about water here in the dry west. Jim had no problem he melted snow! JoAnn

Good, JoAnn! He's a well prepared guy. In case anyone else didn't know - you should melt snow before drinking it because the energy your body uses to melt snow in your stomach can actually end up dehydrating you...says so right in MJ's Outpost book!

Phew! I bet you were relieved when he came back and said he had matches with him all the while!
Jen- You are so right! Melting snow is so important! I know it shocks many people to learn that, but once they start melting the snow they will soon realize how little water is often held in snow and it takes an awful lot of energy to melt it down! If you are in a pinch you can put a canteen of snow under your coat but not right up against your skin. Your body heat will slowly melt the water, however this will use some of your own energy so it isn't the most ideal way in my opinion.
