If you are in an area that has plently of firewood, you can build a "Smoke Blanket"
Basically you build to fires that are long instead of round. Build them about 5 feet apart and set up your bed in between. Dig a trench in the sand or soil so you won't roll towards the flames and surround both flames and trench with rocks to help contain any embers. The heat on both sides should keep you warm and any predators at bay.
Also building a fire in front of a large boulder or rock will keep you warm and snug. The heat will reflect off the rock and surround you...also a bit of protection from wild animals as they cannot completely cirle you and sneak in from behind.

That's a great idea too Juanita! I have done that several times and the rocks really do absorb the heat! Also if you can find a Southern or Western facing rock overhang they are usually warmer too because of absorbing heat during the day.
