Funny you should ask, MB - my favorite scratch art picture was of a sandhill crane, and I gave it to a friend in WA! I had a picture of it on my computer but lost it & hope my mom has a copy on her computer. I'll ask her.... The other picture I have is an idea I had for my 1st book cover. Needless to say, it didn't make it on the book, but I'll try to dig it up too. I felt like mine are primitive too - but you & I have similar styles. I use the little scratchy tool - lots of fine scratches, no big swaths of white. I want to experiment more, though. It's such a perfect medium for night scenes.

I think you are both extremely talented and I most certainly wouldn’t say that your art is primitive! I think that your art is actually very realistic! All of your animals seem very alive and I think you caught the spirit of the creatures in your art.
Jen- I second the opinion that you should enter the art contest! Your work is beautiful and very creative. I say go for it!

The deadline for my local library art contest is Sept 27, so I've feverishly started work on the elk painting I sketched out 2 years ago. So far, I'm pretty excited--color, color, color! I love it that I have an "excuse" to find my art again. It's not about the silly contest or piddly prize money; it's about the motivation to be me. Will share the results soon!

Well, I was going for a relief effect, and finally settled on some joint repair/plaster compound that I planned to paint with acrylics when dry. When I applied the plaster stuff to my canvas (with putty & butter knives), it looked pretty great - lots of furry-looking texture on the elk. But then, as it dried, it began cracking off in big chunks. So, I scraped & scoured it all off & started again. Now, because time is short for the contest, I've resorted to plain-old acrylic paint, but I'm doing a lot of stippling (little brush dabs) that give it almost a mini-mosaic feel that I like. It's a big recycled canvas - maybe 4'x4' - so it's taking some time. The sky is almost done...!

I thought it would be fun to document the process of this painting since it's my first in such a long time, so here are some of the phases it has gone through so far:

   Major metamorphosis - almost done!
In the 2 years since I first sketched it, I never thought of it as a night scene. I visualized lots of deciduous fall colors. But, when I painted the foreground a dark base color, I suddenly realized it was meant to be nighttime. I think it makes it more unusual & mysterious!
9/25 - ok, so this effort has gone through a MAJOR metamorphosis (and I almost cut it up several times). I struggled with wanting a lot of wild color, but then it just didn't feel right. Finally, last night I got it. I guess it wasn't supposed to be anything other than a fairly realistic scene, because now I can feel the air, and that pleases me...at last.

I like the night idea. Isn't it funny how an idea can take many twists and turns. How fun to see the progress. thanks for sharing. MB

Ohh! How things change. I liked the reds and oranges but there was the moon--I like bold colors but as I scrolled down and saw the muted scene--wow you captured it. I guess realistic was what it needed. MB

Thanks, MB! I just finished it this morning & have it loaded in the car to take to the library this afternoon. Will post a pic of the "finished" product soon (not sure any painting is ever really finished, you know?). It's nice to have the kitchen all cleaned up - has been a messy art studio for weeks!

Thanks, MB! I "finished" it this morning & put it in the car so that I can't mess with it anymore. Will drop it off at the library this afternoon! I'll post a final pic as soon as I download it off my camera...
