Here are a couple of the stick horses I made last year (the palamino is featured in MJ's 2007 calendar). I'm making some adjustments this year and will post pics once I finish the new batch for the farmer's market .

Jen-

Those are really cute! Have you ever considered using real horse hair?

I have many fond memories of riding the stick horses my mom made for me when I was a little girl!

My kids love theirs - probably the most enduring toy they've had. Of course, now they like to ride them down to the creek & bathe them & let them wallow in sand. So, I'm doing reconstructive surgery on them. It's fun to show the girls that you can recycle & remodel things when they get old instead of throwing them away. Funny how quality & imagination just don't go out of style, isn't it?
I hadn't thought of real horse hair, Elizaray - not sure where I could find a steady supply of it, but it would look really good!

Jen-

If you have any friends around there that show horses you could probably get quite a bit whenever they shave the bridal paths and unbraid the tails.

I know this topic is older, but I just had to say that those stick horses are DARLING! My boys use shepherd's crooks and "ride" them around the farm. I guess I could at least make some manes for them. You're super-talented with wood, Jen - they're great.

And, on another note, my little sister, when we were kids, had a stick horse - the head was pink, and, if I remember right, the mane was white. Anyway - and here's the coolest part - the horses name? SLIVER!!! As in "Hi, Ho, Silver!" But, since it was wood, she named it Sliver. Clever kid, no?

XOXO, Libbie

Thanks, Libbie!! I love "Sliver" - told my kids about that
I'm actually working on a new design - all drawn out but not cut yet. I am such a hack, really - not much of a fine, finished woodworker - but I love it, so it turns out okay!

I think your work is lovely! - and I can't wait to see the new design - I am just imagining tons of happy little chilluns leaving your booth at the farmers' market riding their own versions of "Sliver." Cool.

XOXO, Libbie

Jenn,
what a great Idea & you did a wonderful job on your 'ponies"...
I think I just might have to make a stick horse to tote in my vintage trailer for my "Sisters on the Fly" outtings.
May I "borrow" you idea/creativity?
And to think I was actually thinking of making the old "sock head" stick horse...I like yours way better!.

Absolutely, Grace! Just as long as you share a pic when you're done
