                      | My husband is constantly wandering the woods. He has found many shed antlers(mainly white tail deer. I'm trying to find a book on how to make things out of them. So far unsuccessful. I tried on the internet but mainly get items to buy. Any suggestions? JoAnn |

                      | I've seen some spectacular chandeliers made out of antlers. If you ever drive over Snoqualmie Pass, stop at the top and take a peek into the hotel lobby there, the newer one on the right as you're driving west. It is a sight to behold. You could probably make one yourself, too. |

Hi Mountain Girl, I have this beautiful hand-mirror made out of a deer antler. My aunt gave it to me when I was in high school, and I'm not sure where she got it, but basically the round looking glass part sits between the forked points and the base of the antler is the handle (can you picure it?). The glass is attached to the antler by some metal work that sort of wraps around the antler at different points and has some pretty filagree-looking loops and whatnot in it. Sorry if I'm not explaining it too well, but it really is beautiful and I've never seen another like it. If it did, I'd buy them as gifts because I love mine. |

I just found a small set of antlers, only two points, still attached to some skull. Sorry, not shed naturally! I was thinking they would make great wall hooks for hanging things from, but I don't know if I sawed the antlers away from the skull, are they hollow inside or solid? If I couldn't figure out how to use them myself, I was thinking of selling them at the flea market with the spin, "Would make a great jackelope...or satyr costume!"

                      | I think the antlers are solid. I've seen them sliced to use as buttons. We have used the antlers to hang things. Just visit my friend who has a very rustic B & B and they were using one as a door handle for their screen door. JoAnn |

Yep, they're solid. I have a bunch around the house - a few big, but mostly small & irregular - my husband is no trophy hunter. We like to make free-standing sculptures with them on deck railings & fences. Right now, most of them are piled up on a rough log shelf around an old mirror (reminds me of some neat old saloon)

Just be careful of finding skulls with antlers attached. When Antlers are shed, the ends are rounded and so Game and Fish can tell. If you have unshed antlers or antlers attached to the skull you have to have a tag. This way they are hoping to keep poachers from killing out of season and saying they "found" the trophy. Check with your local Game and Fish agent before selling them just in case. Each state has their own regulations for found antlers.
