Christmas Bird Count
December 24th - January 5th

Join over 50,000 people across North America in this annual tradition to take a 'citizen census' of migrating birds.

Here's how: http://www.audubon.org/bird/cbc/getinvolved.html

I didn't get a chance to participate in an Audubon CBC, but I did my own count over the Christmas holiday... my sister lives west of Robert Lee, Texas, not far from E.V. Spence Reservoir... that's where I went for Christmas this year... it's a wonderful place to watch birds... here's the list for this year:

northern cardinal
red-bellied woodpecker
house finch
red-winged blackbird
tufted titmouse
American goldfinch
house sparrow
white-crowned sparrow
cactus wren
white-winged dove
Wilson's warbler
house wren
curve-billed thrasher
golden-fronted woodpecker
Inca dove
red-tailed hawk
western meadowlark
ring-billed gull
European starling
American crow
sandhill crane
mourning dove

The golden-fronted woodpecker was a new bird for me, a "lifer"..

I also got to observe an armadillo as it rooted in the mud for grubs or worms or whatever critters they like to eat...

Wow! What a great project! I am hoping to learn more about birdwatching this year because I am sure Little Miss will be interested as she gets older!
