In the description of this topic, it says "Women rebuilding the land" and boy does that strike a chord! It seems every time we move, the place we rent has a horribly neglected yard and somehow I think that is a sad parallel to how land is treated all over this country. I see lots of parks around here, but I almost hate to go there because I know they use all sorts of nasty fertilizers and chemicals to keep the grass just so. Then I try to go to the more natural parks and I find trash and debris everywhere. I think that is one of the reasons why I love to up in to the mountains and far away from the beaten track.
But that one phrase makes me think. Perhaps I need to take responsibility for other people's actions. If no one steps up and rights the wrongs, then others are going to feel more enables to perpetuate the wrong.
So I am thinking that this spring I am going to do some volunteer work around the community, picking up litter and pulling noxious weeds. What do you think?
I think it's a great idea! We volunteer at quite a few places near us. http://civiccenterauthority.org/pages/sfprairie.htm This is our favorite place to go. They've come to know my entire family! (My parents included!) I think it's great to bring up our children with the idea that "this is what we do". It becomes natural for them. Kind of like my parents did with us kids - even with living in the city we found lots of opportunities to pitch in and lend a hand.
