So my daughter and I just discovered how much fun birdwatching is. I've never really done it before, but we pulled out our book of 'Idaho Birds' last week and now we're hooked!
We've seen seven birds now (added Snow Goose to the list today). We've seen a few more but are having trouble identifying tiny, fast-flying, nondescript brown birds. 
Does anyone have any great bird-watching ideas or tips for doing this with kids?

Great! We have a few bird feeders and a bath right by our dining room windows. We can usually identify them while their eating. I keep our bird book on the table.
They are harder to identify while we're out hiking. If we take my Mom with us she's really good at identifying them. My girls enjoy taking a journal with and sketching what they've seen. I'm the one looking up the birds in the book.

Hi Niamh!..
Don't worry that you're not able to identify every bird... even long-time experts have trouble sometimes... you'll find that as you continue to watch birds, you'll start to notice more & more little details that will help you decide what bird you're looking at... things like color, markings, size, posture, behavior will start to become less of a blur to you...
The most important thing in birdwatching is having fun... don't let the technicalities get in the way of that...
Welcome to the forum... this is a wonderful place... if you have any questions at all, there'll be somebody who has the answers or will know where you can go to get them...

Yes, welcome, Sarah! I am such an informal birdwatcher, but I love it. I try to key on some little detail about hard-to-identify birds that might help me find them in my books. I get so excited when I see a bird I don't recognize. Simple pleasures are the best, right? Your blog pictures are adorable. Thanks for sharing!
