I've been lurking and decided to join. I have two of Mary Jane's books, and also get the magazine.
My name's Deb, and I am more of an "out there" person than a farm girl. I was raised in rural southwest Washington, so I learned a lot of the farm skills. But the woods are where my heart is. I have been working for the Forest Service for 29 years, the last 19 on a backcountry trail crew. I've been divorced for 5 years, and live with two cats in a little house near the ranger station. I can walk to work. Since I moved here, I've been working on the garden--raised beds for vegetables, various kinds of berries and fruit, lots of flowers. This spring, I worked up a garden spot at my neighbors' house--he's a retired logger with diabetes and can't get around very well. That's where the potatoes and onions are. Sonny loves sitting out there watching them grow.
Besides forestry and gardening, I'm an artist. I have a Master's degree in drawing and painting, but haven't had much time to use it since I became single. I hope to do more field sketching, writing, and get back into teaching. I'm also working on having a little studio built on to the back of my house.
It's nice to meet all of you. I look forward to sharing stories and adventures.

Hi Deb, and welcome to the MJF Outpost.... I don't get over here as much as I should but I do peek in from time to time. Hubby & I live in E.WA. I wasn't raised in WA but rather when hubby & I took early retirement we moved up from SO. Calif...yep, what a change. We now have 5 acres of dirt w/a small (14trees) orchard, 116 lavender plants in my Lavender Field, a 20x30fenced in garden and wild life(deer, coyote & moose) that come to visit. Lurk all you want and have fun here as well as be sure to share your advantures with us. hugz, >^..^<

Welcome from northeast WA, I am more of an "out there" person than farm girl also . We have to get this forum going again. Seems to have been dormant for too long. My husband is a retired mycologist/plant pathologist and we spend a lot of time in the woods. Gotta love those Forest Service campgrounds! JoAnn

Oh, good. It seems like this forum has been languishing, so it would be nice to bring it back to life. I wondered if everyone is busy with gardens or out camping...
Today I plan to go field sketching and huckleberry picking.
Where in Washington are you?

I live in the "forgotten" or I should say "undiscovered" corner of Washington. I think we are about 40 miles from Canada, Idaho is about 50 and Spokane is 70 miles south. For some reason people don't seem to be just outside enjoying nature anymore. They tend to go on "big" trip to which everyone seems to go. Jim is always wandering the woods and never sees anyone. Just after we moved here he and the dog walked out the back door with their packs and backpacked for three days.Tomorrow Jim and his friend our going on their annual backpacking trip---this time to the Paysatin's west of here. Jim and his friend are 64 years young: ) I've read statistics that people who hunt and fish are dropping drastically. Too much time is being spent indoors in front of the "boxes" (computer and tv)

I went on a fire in the Pasayten--it's been twenty years ago now! Lovely country up there.
I've never spent much time in NE WA. It would be nice to find a "forgotten" place. The ranger district where I work is an hour and a half away from downtown Seattle, so we are pretty busy year round. Today we worked on the Pacific Crest Trail south of Snoqualmie Pass. Big trees, ferns, clearcuts, drizzling rain. Lots and lots of brush--no hope of keeping it all cut back. There's always trail work to do... |

Welcome Deb - from another Deb!
I've been out camping & fishing most of the summer. Seem to be winding down now for school to start up. Much to our dismay. Wish it could go on. We'll still do some more camping - just not as long as we have been. Some short weekends.
We live in the city. Garden, have some berry patches & apple trees. We try to get out to the woods as much as we can until hubby retires.

Deb, Jim and Brian barely made it out of the Paysatans! The evening (Aug. 13)before they were to come off the mountain and home it started to snow! They had to go into the tent without cooking anything for supper. When Jim woke at 6:30 there was 6 - 8 in. of snow on the ground. He shouted at Brian that they had to get the heck out of there. They hastily threw things in their packs and hope they could find the trail. They did and they had to walk 5 miles out. The next concern was that the truck might be snowed in at the trail head but luckily it had turned to rain. There were still several cars at the trailhead. JoAnn

Welcome to the Outpost, Deb!! Wow! I would love to have a job with the forest service! I bet it is super facinating!! What is your favorite part about working for the forest service? Do you get to go out much ie a forest ranger or do you do more of the indoor type work?

Hi Elizaray. I get outside a lot. One of my many complaints about the agency is that in order to advance, you have to chain yourself to a desk and computer. I've chosen the low-paying option so I can keep going to the woods. You can check out my blog. I'm still trying to figure out to get the link into my signature line. dedavisart.wordpress.com
It's too early for snow! I'm not ready!

Deb- to have the blog address show up as a link in your signature it needs to have the www. or the http:// first. :D I will check out your blog later this afternoon! I bet you know all the local places to get blackberries, chokecherries, huckleberries and wild strawberries, don't you?

Deb you sound like my son--refuses to be tied to a desk so he does seasonal work. Up to last year he worked at Katmai National Park do a grizzly bear study. Got fed up with the politics of the higher ups so he taking some time off and he bought a sailboat and sailed up the British Columbia coast and landed in Ketchikan, Alaska. JoAnn
