Now, I admit, I live where I want to live. My farm is my HOME.
But...if I didn't live here, I would certainly live in Seville, Spain. I was able to visit Spain a few years ago, and I am just certain that somewhere in my genetic history there is a Spanish gene that was activated. I LOVE that place. The landscape...the flamenco...the jamon...the people...the language.
In Seville, little girls still want to be flamenco dancers when the grow up, and boys (regardless of the controversy about the "sport") want to be matadors/bullfighters. The river Guadalquivir runs through town, and is the largest river in Andalucia - it's lovely, and is the heart of the city. People sing flamenco songs about the river and its place in Seville's history. I am in love!!! I would SO like to take the boys there when they are older. Boy, do I wish I had known more about "study abroad" when I was in high school. I would have gone there in a second.
Do any of you have a place like that?

I never wanted to visit Europe as a kid - I know, crazy. But I was captivated by places that seemed, well, wilder - Africa, India, South America. Now, I'm dying to go to Europe - every bit of it. France, Germany, Norway, and Ireland call to my ancestral roots. But my hub is Italian, and I'm soooo drawn to Italy as well. Did you know they serve ORGANIC school lunches there?? Utopia!! And now, Libbie, you're painting a picture of Spain I can't resist....
With 3 kids, it ain't gonna be cheap, but we're determined to get there someday (just not sure we'll ever make it back).

Oh, Italy - Jen, you will just love it WHEN you get there. I'm just SURE there's latin in my blood somewhere. Those cultures just seem so homey to me - almost as homey as my farmhouse here, but...not quite! And organic school lunches?!?!? FINALLY! Somewhere that doesn't just SAY they care about their children - they ACT like it!

Ireland! Ireland is my heart-home if I couldn't live here. Or if we were millionaires and could jet around like movie stars! I love the green, I love the storms, and I love the rich culture that is part of my own heritage. Plus then I would only be a hop skip and a jump away from some AMAZING historical landmarks! Gotta love heritage and history!

Oh, Elizaray - I've never been to Ireland, but everything I've ever seen just looks mystical, magical, green, lush, lovely, happy, "real..." I have a little Irish cow - a Dexter named Bridget - that I'm interested in selling - would you like your own black, short, little piece of Ireland ?!?! She's papered and all, and would make a great milk cow...(just thought I'd throw that in - you never know!)
I would sure love to go there -- maybe when we're all jetting around, I'll come visit you there! (hee hee...)

Actually yes, I would love her! But I need to get settled into a place first- it would be at least a year before I could even consider buying such a large animal! Would you consider holding her that long? And of course we would have to figure out how much it would cost to buy and then transport her and if that is even in our budget. :D I thought I read somewhere- maybe on the MaryJanesFarm chat forum (I lurk there LOL) that you are breeding her this year- Have you decided you don't need too milkers?

Yeah - I have her and a Jersey, and I'm going to keep the Jersey and let Bridget go. Since we're only a family of four people (including one baby!), I just don't think I can handle all the milk! Hmmmm....I wonder what we could work out? There's a farmgirl in Manti, Utah, Kate, who is thinking of purchasing her, also, so I'm just going to play it by ear, I guess. You could always e-mail me with your ideas/plans!!!

Elizaray, despite your urge to get to the desert this fall, it sounds like you're as taken with both the arid & the misty climates as I am. When I'm in one, I pine for the other. Arkansas is really a pretty happy medium. I would love to visit Ireland, too (I'm 1/2). My hub visited as a kid when his family lived in Scotland for a few months, and he's never recovered the part of his heart that he left there.

Jen- You are so right. I know once we get settled I will be looking around saying "I forgot how dry it is here!" LOL I will probably be planting lots of trees to shade my yard so what water I have will stay on the ground. And irrigation. I already know I will have to come back at least once a year to visit friends (and pick blackberries!) so hopefully that will tide me over for wishing for the PNW (pacific NW)

Hi Libbie and all - first day in Outpost and enjoying myself like crazy...even though I'm responding to months old posts! I never did have much sense...
Here, at Thistle Cove Farm, is where my roots touch the center of the earth, where my feet are grounded and my wings have room to spread. Daddy's people came to the USA in the mid 1650's, made their way to the Appalachia's and this is h-o-m-e. One side came over from Scotland through Ireland and the other side from Wales. Mother's people settled the Shenandoah Valley, VA but mountain people still. It's funny, Mother and Daddy now live in the flat land of central VA and think I'm crazy for living where it's so bitterly cold in the winter. I just bundled up and I'm fine.
But, Dave and I have done some traveling, visited Spain and Morocco and loved, loved, loved both! We rented an apartment in Tarifa, the southern most part of Spain and Europe and used that as a jumping off point to Tanjer, Morocco and other points in Spain. I loved Seville and a lot of other little towns and villages in Spain and really enjoyed the small markets. The souk in Tanjer is incredible and even more incredible in Marrakesh.
We married too late to have children and tend to travel a lot. It doesn't make up for not having children but it's still fun!

I am glad you are reviving some of these topics! Your Cove sounds great! I love the sounds of all of your travels! That is something that my husband and I both would love to do, but haven't been able to yet! |

Thanks, Alee, sure am enjoying myself here in Outpost. Yes, the Cove is beautiful and I adore living here. Sheep Shearing Day is coming up, 4/4 so come on down! It's open and free to the public and folks will be here demonstrating and selling traditional Appalachian crafts. Cove folks will sell hot food and drink for educational programs and we'll just have a good ole time.

I would love to come! Unfortunatly that is also my dad's birthday! So I will be going down to our home town to spend it with the folks! Take lots of pictures! I would love to see!
By the way- what do you do with your wool? Do you ever make it into wool batting? And if you do, how much do you charge for it? I use wool batting to stuff the dolls I make. I have found a farmgirl Sister to buy wool yarn for the hair from, but I would love to buy the batting from a farmgirl Sister! I currently buy it form the West Earl Woolen Mill in Lancaster County Penn. |
