| Hummer Double Shot!!!.. I had 2 male black-chinned hummingbirds at my feeder yesterday & today!.. first of season, so I'm pretty thrilled... poor things are having to endure one of our west Texas sandstorms this afternoon... I hope they've found a good place to wait it out & don't decide to leave yet... |

| Wow! It is still too cold for hummingbirds here! I feel sorry for the bees I saw buzzing around the other day. I hope they are staying in their hive today! |

Update ~~ Male & female black-chinned hummingbirds have stayed around all summer, so far... I hope that means they've raised at least one brood, but I haven't noticed any that looked like youngsters...
A couple of days ago, I had a female rufous hummer at the feeder... I first noticed her behavior was different from the other females'.. then when I got a good look at her, I could see the subtle differences in her appearance... then, yesterday, I surprised a male rufous at the feeder... just got a blurred look at him as he zipped away... |

Hummingbirds are active and fighting again. They sure are fun to watch. It was pretty quiet when they were rearing their young but now it's back to normal. All the birds seem to be in a feeding frenzy, putting on fat for the winter I imagine. JoAnn

I wish I had bought some feeders this year. I wonder if it is too late to put some out?

You can probably still catch some migrants coming through. Depends on how far north you are. There are still hummers here--they come to my zinnias and honeysuckle.

I am in Northern Wyoming. I might even just do a wild bird feeder to help them get fattened up for winter.
Yesterday I saw some wild turkeys with about 10 little babies with them! YUM! I wish I could hunt them, but I think the ranch owners wouldn't like that.

I've had black-chinned hummingbirds all summer, in spite of the devastating west Texas drought... I finally gave up on keeping the feeders full, the nectar evaporated so fast in the heat, all the hummers had left was thick syrup... I was cleaning & filling almost every day... when my flowers finally started blooming, I decided the hummers would just have to depend on natural nectar, & they haven't disappointed me... today, I had my first rufous hummingbirds of the year, both male & female... entertaining as always, defending "their" territory fiercely... I love watching them, so fiesty... gorgeous birds too...

It's been over 10 days since I saw my last hummer, a female black-chinned... I was hoping they'd stay into October, but I guess September 27 isn't so bad... of course, there's still a chance there will be some stragglers coming through over the next month, so I'm not giving up yet...
I was thrilled to have hummingbird visitors of 4 different species this summer... black-chinned, rufous, broad-tailed, & calliope... taking down the feeders & relying solely on my flower garden didn't seem to make that much difference... sure saved me a lot of $$ on sugar!.. some of my hummer plants are still blooming -- turk's cap, flame acanthus, lantana -- so if any more of the lovely little critters come through, they'll find something to eat... |
